Once you have a few careers in mind, it can be difficult to figure out which one is right for you. This is where career exploration is vital. It is important to get as many facts as possible about each career that interests you.

Start with the basics, find out the answers to the following questions:

  • What job duties you will be expected to perform?
  • What personal qualities you need to have?
  • What skills you need to learn?
  • What is the work environment like?
  • How much money you can expect to earn?
  • How many job opening will be available?
  • Are there medical benefits, sick leave, or paid vacation?
  • What education or training is needed?
  • What can you do in high school to help prepare?

Your school's Career Center is a valuable resource that can help you find this information. Also, the Eureka program is available on-campus and through the Internet at www.eureka.org (see your Career Technician for the site ID code) for students in Merced County.

In addition to learning through printed materials, take the time to talk with people that are currently in the career you hope to have. Informational interviews, Job Shadowing, and Career Industry Days are all great ways of getting first hand information.

Once you have all the facts, then use that information to decide what career you think will be best for you.
