Often the word job, occupation, and career are used to mean the same thing. They actually have very different meanings.

  • A job is work for which you receive pay.
Example: Biologist at XYZ Biotice Company or Cashier at ABC Store

  • An occupation is a group of jobs that are similar.
Example: Teachers, counselors, and Principals are all Educators.
  • A career is reached by combining your skills, knowledge, and your life experiences, and by making good use of them.

The best way to start choosing a career is to think about who you are. Think about the qualities you have and don't have, as well as the things you do and don't enjoy doing.

There is a proven link between various careers and personality types. This means that people with similar interests, likes, dislikes, and abilities tend to enjoy similar occupations. This means that by looking at who you are, you can learn what careers you are more likely to enjoy. Once you find some careers that interest you, the next step is to get as much information as possible about each one. Then use the information to narrow your options to the one you feel is the best fit.
